$20 Million Gift Card Scheme Exposed by Video Cameras

Seven men were recently charged with scamming 1800 people nationwide for $20 million to purchase plumbing items from Home Depot and Lowes to resell for a profit. A 15-month-long investigation was able to identify the suspects and seize their supplies, partly due to evidence provided through video cameras set up throughout these Lowe’s and Home Depot locations.

“This is one of the largest money laundering cases my office has prosecuted in my time as district attorney,"

  •  Nassau County District Attorney, Anne T. Donnelly

This scenario exemplifies the real-world impact of video cameras on providing actionable evidence for serious crimes - and how video cameras directly benefit businesses in pursuing justice and retrieving stolen materials.

But video cameras are just the start. There’s methods to maximize the potential of video cameras by pairing them with products and systems that can offer a more holistic approach to security. Through integration, business leaders and security teams are able to proactively deter crime and identify offenders before they have time to act.

AI-Enabled Video Streaming for Evidence

You’ll need someone to lean on during odd hours when your staff and/ or security team aren’t on the clock. And video cameras are one of the best options for businesses securing abandoned/ desolate areas, as well as companies with a high-volume of foot traffic as well. However, business owners often misunderstand how to maximize the capabilities of their video cameras.

This is an area where Flock Safety shines, our video cameras are capable of integrating with AI technologies like LPR (license plate readers) that can amplify results related to crime reduction, evidence capture, and investigations. The strength of AI within video capture includes:

  • Visual Alerts: Strengthen your ability to identify any suspects caught on camera with vehicle identification and the ability to locate a vehicle across a network of cameras, which significantly reduces the time you’d have to invest in a manual review.
  • People Detection Alerts: Detect when people are in restricted areas during unauthorized times, enabling quicker responses by law enforcement and security teams.
  • Prevent and Investigate: Take proactive action in areas prone to crime with alerts you can monitor from a centralized operational view in FlockOS

FlockOS, The Key to Maximizing Security Cameras

“FlockOS is a one-stop shop for LPR, live surveillance video, live commercial video, officer locations, and more. The OS is scalable, which will allow us to regionalize our real-time information center operations immediately, saving neighboring cities hundreds of thousands of dollars in build costs, and expanding our intelligence network in our region.”

  • Elk Grove Police Dept Representative

FlockOS offers businesses the ease of having all their security systems centralized in one system, freeing security teams and business leaders to have an easier time locating evidence and keeping track of operations.

When equipping yourself with video cameras for security purposes, adopting FlockOS helps ensure that your evidence is easily searchable across various devices like Video Cameras, LPR cameras, and more. And if your business has multiple locations, you can track camera footage from all areas within one centralized location.

By replicating these strategies into your security workflows, businesses can access actionable evidence that can contribute to stronger, more productive partnerships with law enforcement. The above case with Lowes and Home Depot is just the beginning, and Flock Safety looks forward to a future where all crimes involving commercial businesses are a thing of the past.
