Just outside the city of Memphis, Tennessee sits the suburban town of Collierville. Although today most residents know of Collierville as a safe place to call home, longtime residents know that in the past its crime rates have seen ups and downs.
Just two years ago, one neighborhood saw a startling uptick in home burglaries and car break-ins. Knowing this crime streak was out of character, concerned neighbors began searching for a solution that would bring safety back to their community. That’s when they discovered Flock Safety license plate reading (LPR) cameras.
According to HOA Board member Larry Hubbard, Flock was not the first solution that the neighborhood looked into, but they were glad they did. Because the HOA did not want to have to worry about installation or maintenance, they valued Flock Safety’s hands-off approach to customer service. They appreciated that the LPR cameras run on solar power and LTE connectivity, so they would not have to install expensive, unsightly wiring at the entrances of their community.
Although the HOA board was drawn to Flock Safety for many different reasons, Larry says they are especially thankful that the LPR cameras capture still images of vehicles, saving residents or police from having to filter through “hours and hours of footage.”
The neighborhood chose to share their Flock camera network directly with local law enforcement, connecting them to the network of cameras across the country and allowing police to respond in real-time to Hot List alerts should an individual wanted for crime enter the neighborhood.
“If a criminal comes in that’s in a stolen car, it’s awesome that the Flock system will actually contact the local Collierville police department and they can handle anything from there,” said Larry.
“Giving law enforcement more information helps to solve crimes faster,” he explained. “It gives them the ability to find out quicker who broke into your car, who broke into your house, who’s riding down your street at that point in time and what they were doing in your neighborhood at that point in time.”
Following that brief crime streak a few years ago, Flock Safety now ensures that the Collierville community stays safer than ever.
“Just knowing that we have a way to deter crime — and if a crime did happen then we have a way to solve it — that’s the number-one thing that I like,” said Larry.
