Retail Crime is Changing How Americans Shop — Here’s How Technology Can Help

Retail crime is no longer just a concern for business owners—it’s reshaping consumer behavior nationwide. A new survey from Flock Safety and Zencity highlights a growing shift in how Americans shop, with 58% of consumers preferring online to in-person shopping due to concerns over crime.

As retailers seek solutions, the data shows strong public support for security technology that can deter theft and create safer shopping experiences.

The Growing Impact of Retail Crime

From shoplifting to organized retail crime (ORC), theft has become a major issue for retailers and shoppers alike. One-third of survey respondents identified retail crime as a serious concern, and for those who have witnessed theft firsthand, the impact is even greater—63% say they are more likely to shop online as a result.

As crime rates rise, retailers are adding security measures to protect their businesses. Consumers are taking notice:

While these measures attempt to prevent theft, they can also make shopping less convenient, pushing more customers toward online retailers. The challenge for stores is finding ways to enhance security without disrupting the in-store experience.

Consumers Support Technology-Driven Security Solutions

The survey reveals a clear takeaway: Americans want more effective security solutions that deter crime without creating barriers for legitimate shoppers. Support for security technology is strong across the board:

45% of consumers believe technology should be used to combat ORC, rising to 52% in major metro areas.

These findings reflect a demand for proactive crime prevention that ensures retail stores remain safe and welcoming.

Retailers Are Investing in Advanced Security Technology

Retailers are taking action, recognizing that investing in security isn’t just about protecting merchandise—it’s about improving the shopping experience and encouraging customers to return. With shoplifting incidents up 26% year over year, and losses projected to exceed $150 billion by 2026, businesses are turning to advanced security solutions that leverage AI and real-time data sharing.

Flock Safety partners with four of the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) top 10 retailers and seven of the country’s largest malls to combat retail crime through cutting-edge technology. By equipping businesses with AI-driven security tools, LPR cameras, and real-time investigative solutions, Flock helps retailers deter criminal networks, accelerate investigations, and create safer shopping environments.

As concerns over retail crime continue to rise, the data is clear: shoppers want retailers to act, and technology is one of the most effective tools to enhance safety and restore confidence in in-person shopping.
