The City of El Cajon has received the Golden Watchdog Award in Cities from the San Diego County Taxpayers Association® for its innovative approach to public safety. This award, which recognizes the resourceful and efficient use of taxpayer dollars, highlights El Cajon’s strategic investment in Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology to enhance community security – while demonstrating responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

Beyond vehicle-related cases, the ALPR system has significantly contributed to broader law enforcement efforts. For example, El Cajon PD has leveraged ALPR data to conduct major drug seizures, removing dangerous substances such as fentanyl and methamphetamine from the community’s streets.
El Cajon’s ALPR program sets the example of how technology can maximize public safety and taxpayer value. The Golden Watchdog Award underscores the impact of forward-thinking leadership and resourceful investments that lead to concrete, measurable benefits for residents. The city’s recognition is a testament to the importance of advanced solutions in addressing today’s public safety challenges, setting a standard for other communities to follow.
