Porch Pirate Suspect Believed to Have More Sandy Springs Victims

Story from the AJC.

With help from resident-owned technology, Sandy Springs police have arrested a man accused of stealing packages from homes.

Matthew Robert Brown, 34, faces 34 charges for multiple alleged thefts and fraudulent credit card purchases, police said Wednesday.

“We anticipate there will be numerous victims of identity theft,” Sandy Springs police said of Brown, who has warrants out on him from the Atlanta and Fulton County police departments for identity theft, fraud and burglary.

Sandy Springs police began investigating two package thefts in the same area just east of the North Springs MARTA station about July 9.

The department said a Flock license plate reader captured the tag number and put it in the Flock alert system, which is an online database connected to a series of license plate readers in neighborhoods.

One of those license plate readers alerted police that the vehicle has just driven by. Cops found the SUV on Monday.

Inside the vehicle, police said they found eight credit cards with different names, 17 pieces of mail with assorted names and drugs.

Department spokesman Sgt. Sam Worsham said that officers searched Brown’s home and found hundreds of pieces of mail with various names and addresses that didn’t belong to Brown.
